3/35 - Acts of Kindness.
Have you ever felt so happy and yet sad all at the same time? This week ICC made goodie bags for residents of Asbury Place. The look on their faces when we popped in their rooms was priceless, our hearts exploded with joy. So many people in retirement communities have no one to visit with them. We can't forget about the generation that brought us into the world. A smiling face and a few minutes of time are all they want. Thank you, Asbury and Amy Wilson, for allowing us to visit. We feel blessed to have met these kind residents of our community.
2/35 - ACTS OF KINDNESS - Blount Co. Humane Society
Over the last week, we've been collecting donations for the Blount County Humane Society. Today, Johnny our QC Technician and Laura our CEO surprised the volunteers at the shelter with a trunk load of cat/dog food, treats, toys, towels, and litter. This no-kill shelter runs solely on donations and is grateful for any and all help. They have the cutest and most friendly kitties and puppies...we almost ended up with an office kitty.
Why Field Maintenance Is So Important
You know the expression 'if it's not broken, don't fix it.” Well, it doesn't hold true 100% of the time. Below are bars from two v-ring comms, one that didn't break (but dangerously close) and one that did. In the first photo, the bar width under the brushes started at 3/4 inch wide and is now only 1/8 inch. In the 2nd photo, you can see where the bar wore so thin it broke right at the dovetail. While getting the most life out a comm is optimal running the bars this low can result in any number of failures. As you very well know, routine field maintenance and inspections are critically important.

1/35 ACTS OF KINDNESS - Vienna Coffeehouse
Our first Act of Kindness was a success! We secretly bought several people coffee and snacks at The Vienna Coffeehouse. We had so much fun watching people's reactions as they were told a local company took care of their tab. The best part was when it created a chain reaction and several people started buying someone else's order. It does a heart good to spread kindness even with the smallest gesture. ICC Turns 35 with a Celebration of Kindness
ICC turns 35 this year, and we needed a way to celebrate. Party? Too easy... Logo?
Okay, but… Banners? Too showy…
The incredible staff at ICC came up with the perfect solution; one that gets everyone involved in making our 35th year our best ever, at every possible level. We are dubbing 2018 as the “Year of Kindness!” and throughout the year we will perform 35 Acts of Kindness that stretch community and company-wide. As part of our company culture, we believe it’s important to give back to the community where we live, play and work. So keep a lookout for our ICC employees. You’ll find us delivering surprises, picking up litter and collecting donations. We invite everyone to join us as we pass it forward, because there can never be too much kindness in this world.

2017 Company Christmas Party
Spending time with family and friends is what the holidays are all about. At ICC we were fortunate that we could get ahead of the production schedule and extend an extra day of paid vacation to all employees. Here we are enjoying our company Christmas party before the extended holiday. We hope each and everyone enjoyed themselves and had a restful holiday season.

Everyone looks forward to the annual potluck lunch. We received our Christmas bonus and new coats! Thank you Laura and Shawn for your gracious generosity. We have a great, family- oriented team, who can really cook, our bellies and hearts are full. And for extra fun Lana 'elfed' all the employees!

At ICC we believe it's important to support a variety of charities and community organizations. This past Friday, ICC sponsored a skeet shooting team benefiting the local Boy Scouts.
We're proud to say the ICC team took first place in the Shooting for Scouts, Sporting Clay Tournament. The event was held at the Chilhowee Sportsman’s Club in Maryville, TN. Congratulations guys, well done!

Steel Shrink Commutator Construction Overview
1 of 5 - Steel Shrink Ring Commutators
Here we have received the comm assembled to the armature. We then tear it down to collect interior and exterior dimensions. This comm will be rebuilt on the armature shaft, as opposed to most commutators which are assembled to a hub with caps then installed on the armature shaft back at the motor shop.
2 of 5 - Steel Shrink Ring Commutator
This is the segment pack that has been compressed under significant tonnage, banded and cured. The copper and mica are so tight as a result of this process, that the segment pack behaves like a single piece of metal (picture a collector ring). It will grow symmetrically when heated, which then allows ICC to install the segment pack to the mica wrapped armature, with significant retained fit to the shaft.
3 of 5 - Shrink Ring Progress – this compressed segment pack has been installed to the armature shaft. Designed with complex tapers on the bore of the segment pack and the OD of the shaft, the unit retains all the required fit and is ready for the next steps. Of interest, GE and Westinghouse Steel Shrink Ring designs are very different, and require a whole different set of process steps and expertise.
4 of 5 - Cont. Shrink Ring Progress – Can you guess what RPM this 15” diameter commutator operates at? Like glassbound commutators, external steel shrink ring comm segment packs are retained on the OD (unlike v-ring comms which are held together internally). Forged steel rings need to be fully insulated from the copper, as well as installed with significant retained fit to ensure tightness which hold up under instantaneous acceleration and high rpm. This process is one of the most finicky of all, and requires years of experience to master.

Isn’t she beautiful? This careful crafted steel shrink ring commutator will run at 6000 RPM, and our customer can be confident that it will be fully electrically and mechanically sound, thanks to the expertise of our talented people.
SLOTTING SOLID RISERS
Slot perfection. The final step in the production process, slotting risers. Every solid riser commutator is slotted by hand to meet specific winder preferences. It takes a trained eye and a steady hand and many many hours of training to perfect this trade skill.
