Our Products

ICC manufactures a wide range of commutators and slip rings, specializing in custom and small-volume industrial products. We build, repair, and re-engineer units from four inches to over ten feet in diameter, optimizing designs for maximum mechanical stability and electrical efficiency.

V-Ring Commutators

V-ring commutators are available in sizes ranging from four inches to several feet in diameter. Designed for versatility, they accommodate various riser styles to suit different coil configurations. Their copper and mica segment pack is retained internally using a dovetail cut with 3° and 30° angles, which interlock with steel caps at each end. Insulated by mica V-rings, these caps exert pressure on the segment pack, securing the copper bars in place.

Proper seating of the steel caps is essential for stable operation, requiring sufficient curing to account for the different expansion rates of steel and copper. Smaller V-ring commutators (4”–12”) are typically secured with a nut at the outboard end, while larger units use bolts for added stability.

Glassband Commutators

Our glassband commutators are built for durability and performance. Backed by decades of experience, our commutators ensure reliability and durability in even the most demanding environments.

Each unit is engineered with a precise interference fit to a mica-wrapped steel hub for long-term structural integrity. Due to the delicate machining required, glassband commutators cannot be reinsulated, but rebanding is a viable repair option – one ICC is happy to support. To maximize strength, bands are applied in multiple stages at 600 psi, significantly exceeding safety requirements. For added protection, ICC recommends sealing with Viton® to prevent contamination and extend service life.

Steel Shrink Ring Commutators

Steel Shrink Ring commutators, also known as Exciter and Dynamometer commutators, are highly specialized, and are designed to withstand rapid acceleration and extremely high RPM. Unlike V-ring commutators, they rely on forged steel rings to retain the copper and mica segment pack, requiring precise thermal cycling and measurement to ensure a secure fit. Some designs also feature a tapered segment pack I.D. or direct installation onto the armature shaft, enhancing stability and performance under extreme operating conditions.

Slip Rings

ICC manufactures and refills slip rings, offering designs tailored to specific applications. Ranging from 4-18” in diameter with up to 17+ rings, these units vary from simple round lead designs to complex molded or split-ring configurations. Material selection, such as naval brass.
